You Need Tacit Knowledge in The Competition with AI

I don’t hate AI. I also don’t love it. For me, AI is just a tool created by humans for the good purpose of benefiting humans, although it has lost its intention here and there.

I don’t agree we are in a competitive relationship with AI, but I need a title for this article, and that’s how it comes.

I also don’t agree we are in a partnership with AI. Do you feel strange to say that you are in a partnership with your washing machine? Well, you may say, that washing machines don’t have intelligence. But remember, when it was first created, it was a machine with a clever head.

What I don’t agree with and what I believe in don’t represent the minds of all human beings, of course. The development paths of AI vary from one to the other. For a more efficient development of AI and the improvement of our own intelligence, I do believe it is essential to have more storage of tacit knowledge.

Today, I will discuss with you the following points:

  • What is tacit knowledge?
  • Why is it good for a more efficient development of AI?
  • Why do we need it to improve our own intelligence?

What is tacit knowledge?

Tacit knowledge is also called “implicit knowledge”. In short words, it is the knowledge that can hardly be expressed through words. Examples are playing an instrument, doing a sport, intuitions, and the experience gathered from an apprenticeship.

The opposite of that is explicit knowledge or codified knowledge. It is the knowledge that can be documented and transferred to others.

Why is it good for a more efficient development of AI?

One challenge in every AI development is how to make AI think more in the human way. When we say “in a human way”, we don’t mean how many words it can memorize or if it can recite the whole book of the bible. (These are the early challenges in computer science, right now they are the standard basics.)

When we master more tacit knowledge and more people realize the importance of tacit knowledge, it will be easier to develop the imitation capabilities of AI.

Think about it, the more the AI developers gain more tacit knowledge, the easier will be for them to refer to themselves when they input the human capabilities of thinking, assuming, and feeling, to the algorithms.

Why do we need it to improve our own intelligence?

As we explained above, tacit knowledge is difficult to obtain via reading the documents. It comes from practice and the experience accumulated with time.

AI is getting smarter and smarter. In order to find workplaces that fit the co-existential environment with AI, we need more edges to succeed. So far, AI has not mastered all the tacit knowledge. When we equip ourselves with more tacit knowledge and in turn improve our own intelligence, it is easier for us to adapt to this fast-changing technical world.

At the same time, when we improve our own intelligence in this way, it is also easier and faster for us to develop more AI algorithms that can solve more difficult problems at current and create more significant tools for the whole society.
